Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park


Kazinga channel is among the most important features in Queen Elizabeth National Park which is the most well-liked game reserve in Uganda. The  channel connects two Lakes; Lake Gorge which is to the east and Lake Edward which is to the west. The channel has the wonderful view of the most important wildlife ventures within Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Lake George is on the Eastern side of the Kazinga Channel with an overall depth of 2.4 meters and 250 sq. km and it is fed by streams flowing from the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains just north of this lake. Lake Gorge covers a total area of 2 000 sq. km flows through this Kazinga Channel and drains west into the adjacent Lake. Lake Edward is one of the main fresh-water lakes in Uganda. 

The channel attracts a varied range of animals and birds, with one of the world’s largest concentration of hippos and numerous Nile crocodiles. An average of 60 bird species can be spotted during the trip. Carrying up to 40 passengers, the boats guarantee a seat with a view, while expert ranger guides narrate the creatures’ stories.

Launch trips last two hours and run three or four times a day. They can be booked through the Visitor Information Centre in Mweya, or through our office of travel experts – Enquire with us.



The Kazinga Channel is accessed by a boat cruise which begins at the Mweya peninsula, found 20 km west of Kasese-Mbarara main road. There are Special hire taxis available at the Katunguru trading centre. These normally charge around Ush30,000 – a one way fare to Mweya Lodge.

Tourism & Activities at the Channel

On the shores of this channel you will find a large number of wild animals, birds and reptiles all through the year. The Kazinga Channel holds one of the largest population of hippos in the whole world as well as plenty of Nile crocodiles.

These animals can be seen well on a boat cruise down the course of the channel or most likely at the entrance of the spectacular Lake Edward. The Boat Cruise on the Kazinga Channel is extremely rewarding and among the finest and most liked launch trips in the country.
