What to Expect
our wildlife safari adventure starts in the colorful quiet city, Entebbe, driving southwest from the capital Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park. The 370-sq-km highway park, Lake Mburo National Park is an increasingly common stop on the safari circuit since it’s the only place in southern Uganda to see zebra. It’s also the only park in the country with impala, slender mongoose and giant bush rat, and is a great place to look for leopard, topi and eland & giraffe. Some of the 325 species of bird include martial eagle, red-faced barbet, papyrus yellow warbler and African finfoot.
Lake Mburo is just a tip off of the wildlife safari experience. We shake things up a little with a thrilling two-day gorilla trekking adventure in the misty Bwindi Impenetrable forest, home to almost half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas. Set over 331 sq km of improbably steep mountain rainforest, the park is home to an estimated 360 gorillas: undoubtedly Uganda’s biggest tourist drawcard.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest contains 120 species of mammal – more than any of Uganda’s other national parks – though sightings are less common due to the dense forest. Lucky visitors might see forest elephants, 11 species of primate (including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys), duiker, bushbuck, African golden cats and the rare giant forest hog, as well as a host of bird and insect species. For birdwatchers it’s one of the most exciting destinations in the country, with almost 360 species, including 23 of the 24 endemic to the Albertine Rift and several endangered species, such as the African green broadbill. But gorilla tracking is no stroll in the park. It can take anywhere up to 10 hours to find the elusive creatures in the dense undergrowth. Guides lead trekkers up precipitous verges and across rivers, and rusty machetes are used to hack paths through the thick, thorny rainforest. It is the perfect place to live out a childhood Tarzan fantasy, with vast swathes of trees, vines, branches and bushes surrounding trekkers as they penetrate deep into the rainforest.
Our thrilling wildlife safari ends with Queen Elizabeth National Park for another 2 blissful adventure days. Watch elephants roam beneath the backdrop of Rwenzori Mountains and get closely acquainted to the immense herds that roam around the QENP savannah plains. In the tree branches are the captivating tree climbing lions of Ishasha sector. Take a picture, record a memory and breath in the beautiful wild air of Africa Savannah grasslands.
